post Spain Motorcycle Trip - Sep 27 to Oct 4, 2009

July 31st, 2009

I am going to Europe on August 18 (Denmark) and planning on staying there till early September when I will be in Spain (Ibiza). I plan on going from Ibiza to Malaga and do another Edelweiss trip - this one is Souther Spain - starting September 27 ending October 4. There is room for a few more people. The routing is Torremolinos - Marbella - Torremolinos - Grazlema - Ronda - Grazalema - Loja - Granada and back to Torremonlinos and departing back to the US from Malaga. The route covers mostly small winding roads through the Sierras and along the coast. Cost of the tour (seven days, five riding days) is $2,890 and covers bike rental (Honda CBF600, Ducati Monster, Suzuki V-Storm - or upgrade for $590.00 for BMW 800GS, R1200R, R1200GS. This rate is for sharing a room. Single room supplement is $260.00. If you want to bring along a wife, girl friend or… there is a charge of $1,940 for a passenger. This price DOES NOT INCLUDE AIR FARE.

I have ridden with Edelweiss folks before ( 2007 - Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland) and they are a first class operation. Weather should be great. Anyone interested, contact me at jjoffe@gate.net or call me at 787-232-8561 or 407-496-5250 and I can fax you a description page. Book thru me and save even more money.

Regards,

Jeffrey

Our Saturday ride started at 7:30am with a meet and greet at the Griffin Road Shell station.  The initial plan was for a longer ride but the weather forecast was uncertain for the day so we made the decision to ride with a view to returning at any point if the weather closed in (more on this later).  There were six of us including myself.  We were joined by Denis Turcotte on an 07 Wing with over 72,000 miles on it!. He is a former ride coordinator of Miami Wings who left his home in Marathon at 4:30am to join us in time for the 7:30 meet! We were also joined by Woody (friend of Martin Johnson) on an Italian registered BMW R1200, Richard on a VTX, Tony Perez on a Shadow and Mike on the ST keeping us safe at the rear.  After a briefing we departed at 7:45 with the first stop being breakfast at Black Gold in Belle Glade.  The weather was clear if a touch on the warm side but there was no wind and the ride up 27 was pleasant with little traffic.  Black Gold was recommended by Dave Friedenberg and makes a good shorter ride for breakfast.  The service was a little slow but the small group spent time getting to know each other while waiting.  It was such a diverse group, that the time waiting to be served just went by as we talked.  A number of subjects were discussed and Saturday rides seemed to be OK with this (small) group.

Given that the weather was holding, 5 of us decided to continue with a possible destination of Stuart via 76 Kanner Highway but with the understanding that if the weather turned we would head south earlier.  I like this route other than the section through Pahokee where I always feel as if I am going to take a wrong turn.  We continued up the right side of Lake Okeechobee and then made the turn to pickup Kanner.  As we travelled east the sky started to blacken and we elected to head south using the Beeline to the Turnpike to get back home.  We stopped for Gas at the West Palm Beach service station for gas, water and a quick debrief before heading for home.  The last section, the sky turned really ugly with some lightning but the rain held off when I exited for Parkland.

In summary, it was a pleasant ride on some relatively quiet roads. We are planning a longer version of this ride when we can be reasonably sure of the weather holding through the afternoon.

September 19-20, Saturday and Sunday overnighter!

Here is the goal:  Leave on Saturday morning riding up US 27 and around the big pond.  Then head over to Ft Myers and check into a hotel, relax by the pool for a short time and then board the Seminole Gulf Railway for a Murder Mystery Train Dinner Cruise.  We have never done this before, but it looks fun.  Reservations will be required.  The website is http://www.semgulf.com  More information to come.Expect to return on Sunday afternoon early.

November 6-8, Friday-Sunday ride to Historic Savannah, Ga!

We meet at the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Pembroke Pines for breakfast at 6:00a.m. and depart at 7:00 a.m. sharp.  We will head straight up the Sawgrass, Florida Turnpike, and I-95 to Historic Savannah, Ga.  The club stopped here last October during the Fall Leaf Tour 2008.  Everybody wanted to return.  The goal is to arrive early Friday afternoon/evening.  We plan on doing an Old Town Ghost Tour.  This will give you a chance to wear those heavy leather jackets collecting dust in your closets.  We will return on Sunday taking a little slower ride coming home.  Plan on stopping at Destination Daytona for lunch.

There will be many other rides during the weekends between these posted rides.  I just wanted to get these out there now for planning purposes.  Don’t forget the ride this Saturday.  I am working Saturday morning (5:30am-1:30pm), so use your best judgment regarding severe weather.

Ride Safe,

Greg Mathes
