Members,

Our next ride is this Sunday, January 25, 2009.

Originally I had thought about riding up to Destination Daytona, but my shoulder is still not up to that long of a ride.  Instead, we will be riding over to Fisherman’s Wharf in Punta Gorda and having lunch at Harpoon Harry’s  ( http://www.harpoonharrys.com ).

Our route will take us north on US 27 to Hwy 80 west.  At an Exxon Gas Station, we will turn right, pass over the inter-coastal and join State Road 78.  I just found this road last month returning from Tampa.  Speed limit is a leisurely 45 mph and passes some beautiful homes and horst pastures.  Upon reaching State Road 31, we will go north to St Road 74 west to Hwy 17 towards Punta Gorda.  I estimate it should take us 3 31/2 hours on this route.  The return trip you will have the option of either taking I-75 home in 2 hours or returning back with me via St Road 74 all the way to Hwy 29 and US 27 taking about 3 hours.

In addition to the great food and views at Harpoon Harry’s, there are numerous shops selling knick knacks.

Hope you can join us.

Members,

On Sunday, January 11, 2009, the Gold Coast Rider’s Club had their second club ride of the new year.

I always try to arrive early, sometimes this works, and sometimes I get there just in time.  Looking at my watch as I pulled into the dealership parking lot, I was on the early side for this ride.  But to my surprise when I turned the corner, there were already over 20 motorcycles waiting for me!  This was going to be a ride of epic proportions.  I think we ended up with 26 bikes and approximately 34 people.

Thanks for all who rode with us this day.  I had not seen many of you in a very long time.  Many of our rides are just that, a chance for old acquaintances to meet again and the opportunity to meet new people.  For those in the business world, this is a great net-working opportunity.  In today’s economy, you should take every chance you get.

With such a large group, and in the interest of safety, we broke the mob into two smaller more manageable size groups.  Doug Johnson took the first group.  I led the second group a couple minutes behind.  We met up at the corner of Krome Ave and Hwy 41 to top off the gas tanks and enjoy the morning.  This is a pretty popular stop and of course I ran into Debra Travis from Rick Case Honda there.  She was with a group going to Everglades City for lunch.

Soon we were heading west on Hwy 41.  For the most part this is a very nice road.  The exception comes with impatient drivers (both motorcyclists and automobiles) who are in too much of a hurry for their own good.  One car passed us exceeding the speed limit by multiple miles per hour and placed himself and us in danger.  Of course we ran upon the tourist going 20 miles under the posted speed limit also.  This can be just as dangerous as going too fast.  All along the way you could see Florida Alligators sunning themselves at the waters edge.

We made another quick stop at the rest area mid way across, then back on the road.  I always find it quit amazing at how the the terrain changes so rapidly from this point on.  Prior to this rest area, you had mostly swamps left and right of the road.  From the rest area on west you start to encounter what appears to be plains and grassy areas.  Then just before Marco Island, you are back to marshes.

Just before Marco Island, you turn left at a flashing yellow light.  The Iron Horse Salon or something of that sort is on the corner.  Follow this two lane road into the heart of 10,000 Islands, turn left after going over the bridge and next to the middle of no-where and before you know it, you have arrived.  Actually you are deep in mangroves and all of a sudden you make a turn and a small community appears.  Stan’s Idle Hour is the first big place on your left.  There is a large parking area across the street, but we all found parking either right in front or along the side.

The establishment is a rustic place with 20-30 tables, all with umbrellas outside fronted by a large stage.  There are several areas to purchase cold drinks and waitress service is provided to all the tables.  We chose to sit on the inside out of the sun and a little removed from the band.  The place was packed with standing room only outside.  The food was typical bar food.  You had better like your meal deep fried.  Jo-Ann and I went for the cheese burgers and a side order of conch fritters.  We left quite full.

Leaving took a little more time then expected because we had not all parked together.  It was decided to meet up at the gas station back on Hwy 41.  Regrouping there, some wanted to return via Hwy 41 (those that lived south), while some went with me via Hwy 29 to I-75.  A couple riders did not yet have their fill and chose to take Hwy 29 further north and back through Snake Road.  I have not talked to them, but as we turned onto I-75, we saw where the cane fields were being burned.  I hope you guys did not get smoked out.

I-75 is not my favorite road.  The scenery just passes too fast.  This is not what motorcycling is about, but at times you need to use it.  Football Sunday was one of these times.  A short stop at the last rest area and we all said our good-byes and we were leaving for the final miles home.

I returned to my house around 4:40 p.m. with a bike in need of a wash to remove all the bugs.  A great day.

Members,

First things first:

1.  Thanks to Doug Johnson for leading the New Year’s Day ride.  Due to my shoulder surgery, I was not able to ride last week.

2.  Fellow club member and our webmaster, Ken Cimetta is recuperating in the hospital from open heart surgery on Friday.  We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him riding with us again very soon.

3.  My shoulder is healed enough to allow me to ride this weekend, just don’t tell my doctor.

What:  Club Ride to Stan’s Idle Hour restaurant in Goodland, Florida.  It’s near Marco Island if that helps you out.  http://www.stansidlehour.net/Index.html

Why:  I am always looking for that usual place to stop at.  This seems to be one of those.  With the Dolphins out of the Superbowl race, let’s ride!

When:  Meet at Rick Case Honda Powerhouse on January 11, Sunday morning at 9:45 am, (you get to sleep in a little).  We will leave at 10:00 am sharp heading down US 27 to Krome Ave.  We will make a short stop at the gas station on the corner of Hwy 41 and Krome Ave around 10:40 am and leave from there no later then 11:00 am.  The return route will probably be via Alligator Alley, so bring your Sun-Pass.

I will have raffle tickets for sale for chances to win a ride in the Goodyear Blimp and many other prizes.  All money raised goes to the Ride for Kids and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.  Our club was number one last year for donations and attendance.  Please check out our local web page for our upcoming ride;  www.sfrideforkids.org

If you think you might be joining us, please send me an email, especially if you will be meeting us at Hwy 41 and Krome ave.

New Years Day Ride Report  1/1/09

Another SAFE HRC Ride

Good day to all.  First of all I would like to start this note out saying that I am not an author like our fearless leader Greg. Second of all I would wish Ken Cimetta all the best from all the New Years Day Riders.   I let everyone know of Ken’s latest struggle in life.

The day started off a little strange compared to most of our HRC Rides.  I arrived at Cracker Barrel for my famous Pecan Pancakes at about 6:20 to find Robbie from Ireland outside smoking a cigarette. I said hello and quickly went inside to avoid his smoke.  I then ran into Edel his wife.  They are here visiting for approx. 6 weeks. Very nice couple and enjoying life to the MAX.  After sitting for a few minutes, Mark Harnish and his wife Gidget and Paul Cantore came in and sat down.  We all ate but were running a few minutes behind by the time we actually left the CB.

I knew we would be running late to the next destination and I didn’t want Nick and the gang to think we forgot them, so I called Greg to contact Nick as I didn’t have his cell number.  (I do now) Nick never did get that call for some reason  (the number Greg had for Nick’s cell phone was also incorrect) .

We were waiting outside for Gidget and after a few minutes Mark said something happened and she decided not to go and had to wait for her son to come pick her up.  Now it is about 7:25.  We were ready to mount our bikes and Paul looked down at Robbie’s tires and said they look low.   I agreed and asked him when he checked them last. He bought this 2008 GW 1 year ago and left it in his wife’s sisters’ garage for ONE YEAR!!!  He got on the bike and decided to go 350 miles round trip without checking the pressure.  He had 8 in the front and 14 in the back I think.  Not 100 % sure of the pressures but you get the drift.  Very dangerous to be the bike (s) behind them.  Paul MAY have saved a life that day.  I told Robbie he better buy Paul a hamburger. Instead he is sending him a Gold Wing shirt from Ireland. (Hopefully)

We got air in the tires and headed South to pick up the gang. Before we left, I had asked everyone if they were along just to enjoy a ride or did they want walk Key West for the three hours.  All agreed to eat lunch then come right back.  We had a beautiful ride down thru Card Sound and passed about 8 cars the entire way on CS Road.  On Big Pine Key, there had always been a pub called NONAME.  I tried finding it but GPS said it was in an abandoned field.  May have burned down.  The pub walls had dollar bills all over the drywall instead of paint. It is a neat place to visit especially if you have never seen it and NO one on the trip had heard of it.  That took us out of our way 15 minutes each way.

We finally got to Key West via Beachside by Airport and got all the bikes in front of the little non lit lighthouse marking the last destination in the United States.  We had some drunk take a crap load of pictures with various cameras.  Hope we got them all back.  I gave him 5 bucks for his Budweiser.

We got to Hog’s Breath Saloon at 12:30 and planned to head out after lunch.  Robbie and Edel decide to stay in Key West overnight, Nick Cross had to go home and clean the house before Carmen and the kids got home and I then made plans to go to a football game with my daughter as we would be home a few hours earlier than planned.  As we got up to leave everyone decided to stay and walk around after all.  Nick had already left so I came home alone.  I assume everyone got home safely but it was an awesome day all in all. Happy New Year to all.  Good Luck Ken

Riders: Doug Johnson, Nick Cross, Robbie and Edel Noland, Mark Harnish, Crazy Kenny Aronoff, Gabriel Rosado, Jorge and Raquel Morales,Ted and Karla Hyde and Paul Cantore.
