post Solomon’s Castle Ride, Sunday March 8th

March 5th, 2009

Filed under: Events — gregmathes @ 12:41 pm

Members,

What:  A club ride to the not-so-famous Solomon’s Castle. http://www.solomonscastle.com/castletour.htm  A little quirky, but the food at the “Boat in the Moat” is very good!

Why:  Beautiful weather expected, so let’s put some miles on those tires before prime riding season is over.

When:  Sunday, March 8, 2009.

Where:  Meet at Rick Case Honda Powerhouse at 7:30 a.m. for the safety briefing.  Depart at 7:45 a.m. sharp!

Route:  US 27 north to State Road 29 South for 1 mile, then County Road 74 west to County Road 31 north, to State Road 70 West, turn right at the river and hope my GPS finds it the rest of the way.

Lunch opens at 11 am and we really need to get there as close to that time as possible.  They fill up quickly.  Speaking of lunch:  CASH ONLY!  We are out in the middle of no-where and credit cards will not work here.  (Ran into this problem last time.)

The return trip will be slightly different as we will head north a few miles before turning back to the east.  Last time I was here, I took this route and found an Ice-Cream Parlor.  I hope it is open.

Please arrive with a full gas tank and an empty bladder.  Dress in layers because it will be a little chilly in the morning and warming up nicely in the afternoon.

Any questions, drop me an email.

post Upcoming Weekend Rides, Feb 7 & 8, 2009

February 2nd, 2009

Members,

This weekend is promising to be a Motorcyclist Bonanza!

First we have the Annual Sea-Food Festival on Saturday, February 7th.

For those living in Broward and points north, meet at Rick Case Honda Powerhouse at 7:15 a.m., Saturday morning.  Side stands up at 7:30 sharp.  I route will take us south on US 27 and Krome Ave for our first stop at 4-Corners (Krome Ave and Hwy 41) where we will meet those living in Dade and points south.  A short leg stretch and top off the fuel tanks and its back on the road at 8:15 am heading west on Hwy 41 to Everglades City.  There is nothing like cooking fish early in the morning.  http://www.evergladesseafoodfestival.com/  Some ask why leave so early?  The simple answer is parking!  Tens of  thousands of people come to this annual event, by arriving early, we get to park relatively close.  Arriving after 10 am means a long walk or paying $$ for parking.  Some members like to stay for the day and listen to various bands and more.  Others like myself prefer to eat, walk off the food, eat again, then head home.  Our return trip will give you the option of back via Hwy 41 or I-75 for those living north.

Second and more importantly, the 5th Annual South Florida Ride for Kids, Sunday, February 8th.

If you have never gone on a club ride before, but receive my emails, this is one ride you need to attend.  Especially this year!  The Gold Coast Rider’s Club was the number 1 club last year in both attendance and money raised.  Therefore we get to lead the ride in this year’s event!  Doug Johnson will lead the club from Rick Case Honda Powerhouse to Pompano Airport and the Goodyear Blimp Base.  Meet at Rick Case Honda Powerhouse at 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning with a full tank of gas.  Side stands up at 7:45 a.m. sharp!  The goal is to arrive at the Goodyear Blimp Base no later then 8:30 a.m.  The event costs $35.00 per motorcycle and will get you the ride, ride pin, light breakfast, and lunch.  For only $15.00 more you will also get a t-shirt.  You will have a great time and leave knowing that you made a difference.  After the ride, join us for the Celebration of Life under the tent, then get a close up view of the Goodyear Blimp Spirit of Innovation.  Make sure you bring your camera!

Weather forecast for the upcoming weekend:

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. Breezy, with a northeast wind around 16 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 56.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 74.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 63.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 77.

If you have any questions, drop me an email.  See you this weekend!

Members,

Our next ride is this Sunday, January 25, 2009.

Originally I had thought about riding up to Destination Daytona, but my shoulder is still not up to that long of a ride.  Instead, we will be riding over to Fisherman’s Wharf in Punta Gorda and having lunch at Harpoon Harry’s  ( http://www.harpoonharrys.com ).

Our route will take us north on US 27 to Hwy 80 west.  At an Exxon Gas Station, we will turn right, pass over the inter-coastal and join State Road 78.  I just found this road last month returning from Tampa.  Speed limit is a leisurely 45 mph and passes some beautiful homes and horst pastures.  Upon reaching State Road 31, we will go north to St Road 74 west to Hwy 17 towards Punta Gorda.  I estimate it should take us 3 31/2 hours on this route.  The return trip you will have the option of either taking I-75 home in 2 hours or returning back with me via St Road 74 all the way to Hwy 29 and US 27 taking about 3 hours.

In addition to the great food and views at Harpoon Harry’s, there are numerous shops selling knick knacks.

Hope you can join us.
